On Wednesday evening (14 January 2015), Singapore Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen announced the location of Air Asia flight QZ8501’s fuselage and wings.
He also revealed that the discovery was made by Singapore naval vessel, MV Swift Rescue. It utitlized its Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) to conduct its underwater search operations and made the discovery.
Indonesian search authorities have been informed the location and further recovery operation can now begin. This discovery is of importance as many of the unrecovered bodies are believed to be still trapped within the aircraft’s main body.
This discovery could at last give closure to the families still waiting to do final rites for their loved ones.
Dr Ng ended his post by thanking the efforts of all SAF serviceman who did not give up in their search and rescue efforts despite the rough and unfavourable conditions in the Java sea.
