The Government has pledged S$100,000 to support flood relief efforts in Malaysia. Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) announced in a news release on Monday (Dec 29) that the money will be channeled to flood victims via the Singapore Red Cross (SRC).

MFA said the Government will also provide water purification units to help ensure affected residents have clean drinking water. More than 160,000 people have been affected by the country’s worst flooding in decades.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong called Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak on Monday afternoon to express Singapore’s concern for victims of the floods and to offer assistance, MFA said. Foreign minister K Shanmugam, Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew, and Defence Minsister Ng Eng Hen have also spoken to their Malaysian counterparts to express concern and offer assistance.

In a separate news release, the SRC said it would be contributing an additional S$127,000 in aid for Malaysian flood victims from its Disaster Response Emergency Fund. The total sum of 600,000 ringgit (S$227,000) will be handed to the Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS) in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday.

The funds will be used to purchase and distribute relief items such as food rations, hygiene kits and blankets to those affected. Some 300 MRCS volunteers have been mobilised and will support the relief distribution.

“As a close neighbour and friend, all Singaporeans are very concerned about the flooding situation in several Malaysian states. We are heartened that many Singaporeans have approached the SRC to offer their support,” said Mr Benjamin William, SRC’s secretary-general.

He added: “We make this humble contribution in the spirit of solidarity with our Malaysian friends. We hope that the flood waters will recede quickly and with the resilience of the affected communities, life will return to normalcy soon.”
