Bukit Batok rat problem started with the dogs

I refer to the report “Rats infest mound near Bukit Batok MRT Station” (Dec 18). The rats are the result of not solving the dog problem.

When I moved into the block overlooking the MRT station and the mound two years ago, I saw a notice that the problem of stray dogs was being looked into, following residents’ complaints. Unfortunately, until today, it has not been solved.

The dogs still bark nightly and residents cannot get a good sleep. It is a common talking point among residents around the MRT area.

The problem is exacerbated by outsiders with misplaced kindness coming in their cars to the mound to feed the dogs in the evenings. This brought about the rat problem.

Attempts to remove the dogs riled animal activists, but these activists may not be residents here, so the stakeholders’ plight must be the first consideration to create a happy, harmonious environment.

Is a simple problem of stray dogs so difficult to resolve? Perhaps the activists should adopt the dogs and everyone will be happy.

Has the town council done its job? If not, it deserves a fine.
