A 35-year-old man, surnamed Lin, made headlines after becoming the first man in Jiangcheng, Hubei province to get his mammary gland removed because he feared getting breast cancer, according to Xinhua News.
Lin became worried after his mother and sister were diagnosed with the disease one after another. He said his fears were further exacerbated by news of American actress Angelina Jolie getting a double mastectomy (because the fact that a totally unrelated actress has breast cancer affects his chances, somehow).
Last Monday, he went to a hospital in Wuhan to be examined, whereupon doctors found a sizable lump in his mammary glands. They told him the lump was harmless and didn’t need to be removed. However, Mr. Lin insisted on getting the operation, saying “please, if you don’t help me remove it [the gland], I will die young in a few years.” They obliged.
According to the doctor, although men have breast tissue, their chances of getting breast cancer are about 100 times less than that of women.
They further warned other residents not to blindly follow suit.
We’d say they should’ve prescribed Lin some OCD meds instead, but after hearing about this man’s unfortunate doctor visit, we don’t really know what to think anymore.
