Students used to explain benefits of Pioneer Generation Package to old folks

About 300 students from Swiss Cottage Secondary School spent the first Sunday of their June holidays visiting elderly residents in Bukit Batok to explain key benefits of the Pioneer Generation Package.

While members of Singapore’s pioneer generation will receive, as part of the package, Medisave top-ups of between S$200 and S$800 every year for life starting from next month, many are still unclear about the details.

Said Dr Amy Khor, Senior Minister of State for Health and Member of Parliament for Hong Kah North: “Very often, word of mouth is the most effective way to help them become aware of the help schemes and understand these healthcare schemes.”

Apart from explaining the benefits to seniors, the students also surveyed them about the facilities and programmes that are needed to make the estate more elderly-friendly. Said Dini Afrina, a student: “We face a lot of language barriers as we have different races talking to each other. So my friends and I … try to talk to them in simple language, so they can understand more.”
