KOTA TINGGI – A 15-year-old boy faces a possible death sentence after he was charged with the murder of a senior citizen at a magistrate's court here.
The juvenile was brought to court here yesterday over the death of Jariah Abu Bakar, 62, at her home in Block 9, Felda Lok Heng Barat here, at around 12.05pm on July 22.
He was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code with murder, which carries the mandatory death sentence upon conviction.
When the charge was read out to him before Kota Tinggi Sessions Court assistant registrar Hairul Azhar Muhamad, the boy, wearing a purple lock-up uniform, nodded.
Hairul Azhar set Sept 8 for the next mention pending a post-mortem report. No plea was recorded.
DPP Natassa Zaini prosecuted while the teenager was unrepresented.
Apparently, the boy, along with four others, allegedly committed the murder following a robbery that went awry.
Jariah, a single mother, was found dead face down in her living room by her daughter when she returned from Kuala Lumpur to celebrate Hari Raya with her.
The mother-of-three was hit on the head with a wooden stick when she saw the five suspects, including the accused and a married couple, inside her home.
The accused was said to have entered the victim's house from the ceiling and let the others in via the front door. They stole two mobile phones and a gold chain.
The other four suspects, aged between 15 and 28, were released on a police bond of RM50,000 (S$19,400) each.
