I WAS saddened and disappointed by Mr Pavithran Vidyadharan’s letter (“Raise penalties for PRs who dodge NS”; Forum Online, last Friday), which suggested harsh measures like confiscation of banker’s guarantees and deportation for permanent residents who default on their national service obligations.
As a small nation, Singapore depends on foreign talent. Foreigners from Europe, Asia and other nations are required in fields like microbiology, biomedicine and nanotechnology, as we do not have enough local talent.
If we hound these foreigners with compulsory NS and community service, they may think twice before coming here.
Our neighbouring countries are opening up and will welcome talent, offering them a comfortable standard of living. In the end, Singapore might lose out. So let us not be too opposed to foreigners in the interests of our nation.
