SINGAPORE – Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen announced changes to the IPPT format today (23 Jul).

Under the new IPPT format, NSmen will be required to complete three stations instead of five. The three stations are Push Ups, Sit-ups and 2.4 Kilometers run. These changes are only applicable to Operationally Ready NSmen. NSFs and SAF regulars are still required to complete the five stations under the previous format.

In a statement to the media, MINDEF spokesperson Brigadier-General (BG) Yee Ker Xing added that it is MINDEF’s priority that NSmen maintain their fitness level to ensure operational readiness and MINDEF expects more NSmen to pass their annual IPPT under the new format.

“Despite these changes, MINDEF still takes a serious view of NSmen who do not make any efforts to pass their IPPT”, BG Yee warns, “Under the new IPPT format, NSmen who failed any two of the three stations will be subjected to military disciplinary actions and we do not rule out the use of military detention.”

Singaporeans are divided over the new changes.

Mr Cao Keng Kia told ST, “No Standing Broad Jump! This time I will confirm pass my IPPT. I don’t have to go Remedial Training anymore! I can do more OT and and don’t have to fear FTs steal my job! Well done PAP!”

However, former Commando officer Mr See Beh Onn frowned, “I get gold for my IPPT every year! I trained hard and I get 5 points for each of the stations and now they are going to lower the standards? Singapore is doomed. What is PAP thinking? Getting populist? PAP will not get my vote this time.”

More information on the new IPPT format will be provided by Chief of Army Perry Lim tomorrow.
