Creative Muslim Youth Kakis (CMYK), a Muslim society for students and graduates from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and Lasalle College of the Arts.

The donation is to help fund programmes that will improve the welfare of the community. It is said to be an annual tradition during this holy month of Ramadan.

In his opening speech last night (15 Jul), Minister for Communications and Information Yaacob Ibrahim, who is also Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs, said student bodies in tertiary institutions run many programmes to benefit the wider community.

For example, NUSMS conducted a camp to help madrasah students hone their leadership skills, while CMYK and NTUMS have both reached out to needy Muslim families this year.

Dr Yaacob said, “(It) is also important for us to signal to the student bodies that you are an important part of the Malay/Muslim community. You contribute in your own way to uplift our community by inspiring madrasah students, by working with low-income families.”

“I look forward to seeing you as professionals one day giving back to the community,” he added.

Dr Yaacob presented a $15,000 cheque to the student bodies in a ceremony attended by the media yesterday.

After the pay cut announced in Parliament in 2012, the expected annual salaries of the various political appointees are listed as follows [Link]:

Minister (grade MR1): $1.8 million or more
Minister (grade MR2): $1.5 million or more
Minister (grade MR3): $1.2 million or more

It’s not known why the PAP MPs are not donating more given that they are earning a lot more than $1,364.
