Daily haze forecasts and health advisories from Monday: NEA

BY FENG ZENGKUN, Straits Times

SINGAPORE – Singaporeans will get daily haze forecasts and health advisories from Monday (jun 16) with the start of the south-west monsoon season.

The National Environment Agency said on Friday that drier weather has affected parts of the region in the past few days, and isolated hotspots were visible in some areas of Sumatra and Kalimantan in Indonesia.

“In the coming weeks, the south-west monsoon is expected to strengthen and persist with winds forecast to blow mostly from the southeast or southwest,” said the agency. This could carry smoke haze from fires in Indonesia to Singapore.

Earlier this week, Indonesia’s national news agency Antara reported a surge in hotspots in Sumatra. About 220 hotspots were detected by satellites on Sunday, the highest number in three months, Antara said. Fires were raging across Aceh, Jambi, Riau, and north, south and west Sumatra, the agency said.
