A man was charged in court on Wednesday with organising a public procession to commemorate Guy Fawkes Day last November without a permit.

Jacob Lau Jian Rong, 23, is accused of organising the procession from City Hall MRT Station, to demonstrate support for a movement called the “Million Mask March Singapore” which is against the new media regulations by the Media Development Authority when no permit had been granted.

The alleged offence occurred at about 7pm on Nov 5 last year.

Lau’s lawyer Amerjeet Singh said he had just been briefed, and applied for an adjournment to take instructions.

The case will be mentioned on June 4.

According to earlier reports, 12 men had gathered near City Hall, togged in red and black clothes. Three of them were wearing Guy Fawkes masks.

About three hours later, three others, including a woman, were seen with masks in Orchard Road.

Police officers found a total of 14 masks. The protesters were between 16 and 27 years old.

The maximum penalty for organising a public procession without a permit is a fine of $5,000.
