Jobless man charged with stabbing at void deck

AN UNEMPLOYED man was charged in a district court yesterday with stabbing a 62-year-old man at the void deck of a Housing Board block in Ang Mo Kio.

No plea was taken from Ong Eng Huat, 43, who allegedly stabbed Chinese national He Jinzhu five times in the back with a pair of scissors, at about 6.15am last Saturday.

Ong, who was arrested that afternoon, is also believed to have attacked two other men in Yishun in the three hours following the first attack.

Police said that the case was “particularly unsettling” as he had seemingly targeted random victims.

Ong has been remanded for psychiatric evaluation until April 28 when his case will be mentioned again.

If convicted, he could be jailed for up to seven years, fined, caned or given any of the combined punishment.
