Security issues the focus for Parliament on Monday

Security issues will be in the spotlight at Monday’s Parliament sitting, expected to be the last session before a half-time break.

Questions have been filed by seven MPs on the breach at Woodlands Checkpoint last month and on airport security, in light of reports that two passengers on board missing Malaysian Airlines flight MH370 had used stolen passports.

Mr Zaqy Mohamad (Choa Chu Kang GRC) will ask about security measures that failed to prevent a second Woodlands Checkpoint breach in three months. Mr Hri Kumar Nair (Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC) wants updates on a review that followed the unauthorised entry.

In March, a 64-year-old Singapore permanent resident drove his car over a security barrier at the checkpoint. Two months earlier, a Malaysian teacher tailgated another car, avoiding the detection of officers to cross the border.

Five MPs will also raise questions on airport security, and lost and stolen passports as the search for the missing Malaysian Airlines flight continues.

Another hot topic is World Cup viewing charges. Viewers here will have to pay $112 to SingTel to watch the football competition this June.

Mr Pritam Singh (Worker’s Party), one of four MPs who have filed questions on this, will ask if a thorough review of policies that govern the broadcast of popular sporting events in Singapore will be considered.
