Singapore will now have 5 autonomous universities after the Singapore Institute of Technology was approved to become an autonomous university.
The change will give young Singaporeans more choices and more chances to study in a local university.
SIT will create up to 200 new places in Engineering and Accounting programs.
With the new bill, SIT will be able to award degrees and diplomas and the government will be allowed to provide resources to the Institution and be able to monitor and have a say in its performance and finances.
The extra monitoring ability is to ensure that public funds are used correctly.
