POLY STUDENTS NOT EQUIPPED TO DO WELL IN UNIVERSITIES

Our local media still think this is the 1980s where people just lap up their BS propaganda. Education is not 'studies' as you know it in the polytechnic. Education in a good University is a training of the mind. Contrary to what our education minister, Ong Ye Kung, says, education's end goal is NOT the acquiring of skills. Skills can become obsolete. Education is about the training of minds. Ability to analyse. Excellent 3R skills - Reading, wRiting aND aRithmetic skills. Ability to ask the right questions. Ability to frame complex situations. I dare say the polytechnic education action does NOT prepare the graduates for this as they focus on CURRENT skills.

The University forces one to go back to the basics of 3Rs - that is why so many poly kias stumble when they go to University. It is not that they lack skills. They lack the strong foundation (3Rs) to acquire new skills in future. To add in a key point; normally JC students come from more well-to-do family with university educated parents. So they know what is the gist of how society is structured and its workings and how these are tied to educational attainment.

POLY GRADS REAL STARTING SALARIES DID NOT RISE IN LAST 8 YEARS

I refer to the article “Salaries for polytechnic graduates rise after remaining flat for 2 years” (Straits Times, Jan 8). It states that “A graduate employment survey, conducted by the five polytechnics on the class of 2015, showed that those in full-time employment earned a gross monthly salary of about $2,100. In the previous two years, the salary remained at $2,000. But the proportion of those with full-time permanent jobs, though, fell from 59.4 per cent for the class of 2014 to 57.9 per cent for those graduating last year.

INDIAN FT PARENT: POLY IS FOR IDIOTS WHO EVENTUALLY END UP WITH SHITTY JOBS

My dad hasn't studied in the local system at all but he always lectures me on how i absolutely HAVE to go to jc and that poly is for idiots which i'm assuming is untrue. he also says that the government funds polys and gives them better facilities than jcs to attract students so more people go to poly and end up getting shitty jobs (because there is a shortage of people who want to work those jobs) which honestly sounds like some conspiracy shit to me. i really don't know if he's bullshitting or not and i need some external advice. he also says pioneer jc is full of gangsters, hope thats not true.

GOVT GIVES PATHETIC $25 MONTHLY BURSARY AFTER 8% SCHOOL FEE HIKE

I refer to the article “ITE, poly fees going up for new students” (Straits Times, Dec 9). It states that “Tuition fees at these institutions have been raised by between 1.2 per cent and about 8 per cent. Tuition fees for polytechnics and the ITE have been going up in the last few years, but the spokesman stressed that the Government continues to subsidise heavily the cost of education at these institutions, even after the fee increases.
