WP COMMUNITY FUND WALK A RESOUNDING SUCCESS

With the Workers' Party celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, over 500 participants and volunteers turned up at the Punggol Park early this Sunday morning (16 July) to support an inaugural community walk for the WP's Community Fund (WPCF).

The WPCF is an independent registered charity formed on 27 February 2014, the first ever set up by an opposition party in Singapore. According to the WP, the WPCF was set up in 2011 after the WP won Aljunied GRC.

“After settling more urgent constituency and grassroots matters which then gave WP MPs a chance to look at how the WP can better assist needy residents, it was felt that setting up an independent organisation as a charity with clear objectives would draw a clear line between political work and social and charitable work.”

Participating together with attendees in the 3.8km was WP Secretary-General and WPCF chairman Low Thia Khiang, as well as all WP members of parliament. WP Chairwoman Sylvia Lim could not be present as she is overseas.

The walk was flagged off by WPCF chairman Low Thia Khiang, with the route going along Punggol Park Pavilion, stretching to Serangoon River (Sengkang East Drive) before heading back to the Pavilion from the other side of the park.
