Dear A.S.S. Editor
A serial taxi cheat was fined $8,000 and ordered to pay compensation of $871.65 to 15 taxi drivers, after she pleaded guilty to 10 counts of fare evasions. The woman faces 40 days in jail for the fine and 10 days in jail for the compensation order if she is unable to pay both amounts.
Tan Mei Shan, 29, carried out her taxi cheating spree from January 2014 to October 2016. By the time she was done, she had cheated 15 tax drivers of fares from $25.10 to $105.60. She would board a taxi and request to make multiple stops during the trip to collect items or buy food. She would leave her phone number to the drivers, often saying she was returning to the vehicles, but became uncontactable after a while.
In some cases, she even said she would contact the drivers at a later date to pay her fare, but never did. Tan pleaded in court that she had depression and asked for leniency, and also stated that she had a few dollars with her and asked to pay the fine in installments.
