OVERWHELMING NEGATIVE SENTIMENT FROM NETIZENS ON PE 2017 WALKOVER

Negative sentiments have dominated social media over the recent Presidential Election walkover after Madam Halimah Yacob was deemed the only candidate eligible to run by the Presidential Elections Committee on Monday, says a report by global media monitoring organization Meltwater.

Initially, sentiment had been divided over the presidential election, which was already marred by unhappiness over the reservation of the election for Malay candidates only, followed by torrid controversy over the issue of Madam Halimah Yacob's Indian parentage.

However, Meltwater data suggests that an overwhelming near 100% increase in negative sentiment and a halving of positive sentiment took place once Madam Halimah Yacob's walkover was announced.

Madam Halimah was declared Singapore's incoming president today and will be sworn in on Thursday evening.
